Eco-Friendly Kitchen Cabinets—Non-toxic and affordable

If you’re building a new home or getting your current one renovated, you may come across several options when it comes to kitchen cabinetry. You want more space, added functionality, stunning aesthetics, and more. But what more? Consider getting eco-friendly or ‘green’ cabinetry. Many cabinets today are made from glue, paint and materials containing urea formaldehyde (UF), which give out unhealthy fumes, making it a health hazard for your family members. And most of us don’t even think about that. It’s about time we do.   Eco-friendly cabinets aren’t just for environmentalists concerned about reducing their carbon footprint. They are designed for anyone who is looking to create a healthier environment in their house. Here are several things that make eco-friendly cabinets different:

ESP Seal

The ESP (Environmental Stewardship Program) was created by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturer Association (KCMA) to help customers, dealers and architects identify eco-friendly products. More than 150 cabinet manufacturers today carry the ESP seal. The seal is only granted to manufacturers who meet the requirements of air-quality, process management, product management and customer relations. All kinds of cabinets, including custom, semi-custom and stock cabinets can carry the ESP seal.

Low or No VOC finishes

VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are chemical fumes emitted from finishing products. For improved indoor air quality, the eco-friendly cabinets are finished with products with no or safer levels of VOC emission. These are generally water-based finishing products which have very low levels of VOC.

The inside boxes of the cabinets, which are made from particleboards and fiberboards often contain formaldehyde, which give out unhealthy fumes. However, eco-friendly cabinets are free from formaldehyde, which is also required by law since 2003.

FSC certified wood

Another thing that makes kitchen cabinets eco-friendly is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood. This ensures that the wood used for making the kitchen cabinets comes from responsibly harvested wood, with minimum impact on the environment.

Eco-friendly cabinets are extremely durable because they are made with robust hardware. They give decades of service and can withstand heat and steam from ovens and stove, as well as other exposures that are usually present in the kitchen.

There are a variety of options when it comes to eco-friendly kitchen cabinets. They can be made with salvaged wood, bamboo, wood veneers, lyptus, particle boards, plywood, fiberboards, and wheat straw panels. Most of these options are extremely affordable, as the materials can be found at very cheap prices.
